This training will introduce you to the fundamentals of mental illness. A mental illness is illness just like a physical illness. Instead of affecting a person's body, it affects a person's feelings, thoughts, and behavior by affecting the organ that controls them -- the brain. Mental disorders and mental health problems can affect people at any age.
A physical illness might make it difficult to walk; a mental illness can make it difficult to maintain relationships with people or cope with life's daily activities. Understanding mental illness will help you understand the families and children that have a mental illness.
When you complete this training you will be able to:
- Identify three major mental disorders and list the symptoms for each
- Describe the effects of a major mental illness on the life of a family or child
- Describe how to apply this knowledge when investigating or working with families and children
