The Stages of Change

Through the process of working with families, the child protection worker faces the challenge of promoting change that lead to safety, permanency, and well-being of children. Case workers need to understand resistance to change and the elements of change within their casework practice in order to empower their families.

Objectives:

  • Describe the six stages of client readiness for change
  • Be able to assess the stage of readiness for existing clients
  • Identify the strategies or skills that workers should use at each stage of readiness for change
  • Describe the five motivators for change
